'Hapsburgia' is an invented term which describes the lands of the former Hapsburg Empire encompassing the modern day nations of Romania, Croatia, Slovakia and, of course, Austria and Hungary. Hapsburgia examines the multi-ethnic communities from the Roma gypsies in Transylvania to beautiful young girls in Bratislava.
The origins of Hapsburgia lie in Fordham's exhibition "Between Myth and Transformation: Images of Transylvania and Southwest Ireland" which was photographed in the summers of 2003 and 2004. The exhibition was commissioned by Enterprise Ireland (Irish Government Trade Agency), and took place in The Cultural Palace, Targu Mures, Romania. "In spite of the geographical distance and historical differences, the photographer succeeds in convincing us that we humans live in a very small world. Perhaps the politicians, businessmen and local authorities will keep this in mind when considering the lifestyle, culture and mentality of these two countries."
